NetCorps Jordan reinforces National Strategy

NetCorps Jordan hosted a briefing session at the Sheraton Amman Hotel which targeted the media sector in Jordan. The participating representatives were introduced to the institution’s work in supporting Entrepreneurship and Education related projects and initiatives whereby the application of technology can be utilized. They were also engaged in a discussion of the role and participation of the media in spreading awareness, improving access, and engaging local communities in socio-economic development.NetCorps Jordan is a pioneering community development program, which combines the energy of youth and the potential of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to create real and sustainable impact that contributes to the long-term economic and social development of the country, and to the broader effort of poverty alleviation in Jordan. NetCorps Jordan taps into the creativity and energy of youth to serve their communities. Jordan’s young leaders are provided with a blend of technical and soft skills training to assist Jordanians in integrating technology into their daily lives. This gives them the opportunity to gain practical work experience, and to facilitate the practical use of technology by local communities around Jordan.NetCorps Jordan, which was launched in July 2003 by HM King Abdallah II in conjunction with the Knowledge Stations Initiative, has been operating as an independent local non-profit company since June 2005. Its goal is to drive progress and promote economic development in Jordan by effectively introducing the practical application of technology. CEO Mrs Tania Jordan, says that “NetCorps Jordan’s success highly depends on its strong network of national, international, private sector and public sector partners who support the implementation of programs and projects at various levels. Such partners include the Knowledge Stations throughout the country, the Jordan Education Initiative, and the Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development, among others”. NetCorps Jordan promotes the use of technology to strengthen entrepreneurship initiatives and technology-based education projects. Its current programming activities include support for the Jordan Education Initiative being implemented by 20 interns in the 100 Discovery Schools in Amman and benefiting 2460 teachers and lab technicians. The Mother & Child Project is being implemented by 26 interns in Tafileh, Maan, Karak and Aqaba whereby impacting 964 kindergarten children, 226 mothers and 58 teachers. The project in Zarqa is being implemented by 16 interns who are working on building the capacities of 32 individuals from 22 small and medium enterprises, with a focus on Sales Management. Mr Emile Cubeisy, Chairman of the Board of Directors emphasized the “importance of valuable partnerships between the public and private sectors as a means to foster the provision of quality services to Jordanian communities”. He also stressed “the role various institutions, like NetCorps Jordan, can play in equipping youth and offering them the opportunity to gain practical work experience in order to enter the labor market with the needed skills and professional experience”. NetCorps Jordan aims to fulfill the National Information and Communication Technology Strategy, which recognizes the “importance of engaging youth...” under the premise that “Youth are Jordan’s greatest asset in the march towards e-readiness and e-growth. To optimize the benefit of using ICT as a tool for development, the strategy focuses on youth as the most important beneficiary … to equip them with advanced skills that will lead to the creation of a knowledge-based economy and society”.NetCorps Jordan was established with the support of CISCO and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and is able to implement its programming initiatives in partnership with the USAID-funded AMIR Program.
