Shabakat Al Ordon "Tawasol Graduation Event" - Jordan Times 12 Feb 2009

Shabakat Al Ordon… helping young people hone their business skills
By Khetam Malkawi
AMMAN - Deifallah Sumaiat found it difficult to interact with his community and communicate with people to enlist their help in running his own business until he joined a training course on communication skills as part of the Shabakat Al Ordon Programme.
“As a blind person, I used to prefer being on my own without attempting to communicate with others, especially sighted people,” he said, upon graduating from Shabakat Al Ordon Programme on Wednesday.
Sumaiat, who owns an Internet café in Ramtha, joined a four-week training course on management of small- and medium-sized businesses, under Shabakat Al Ordon’s Tawasol and Shabab Programme to help him develop his business and generate more income.
“After receiving the theoretical and practical training, I gained skills on how to deal with people and attract more customers. I am now satisfied with my income,” the 32-year-old told The Jordan Times during yesterday’s graduation ceremony for 1,200 members of the We are All Jordan Youth Commission.
According to Shabakat Al Ordon Executive Manager Rami Karmi, the aim of the programme is to empower and positively change the lives of young Jordanians.
“Since its establishment in 2005, and until January 2009, the network provided support to 7,300 beneficiaries who implemented 2,356 projects,” Karmi added.
He also referred to the importance of partnership with other institutions in order to widen the targeted groups.
“The Tawasol network will also expand next year and target around 10,000 beneficiaries through the support of the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology,” Karmi explained.
Shabakat Al Ordon is a nonprofit institution which seeks to drive and implement transformational strategies that improve the economic and social well-being of local communities.
It focuses on young people who are empowered with technical, professional and facilitation skills in order to build communities of practice and incubate initiatives that respond to community needs through the integration of ICT in their day-to-day lives.
