Orange Fund Graduates First Batch of Shabakat Sponsored Program in Jordan Valley

Orange Jordan honors the first wave of graduates from Microsoft Digital literacy program in Northern Jordan Valley

As part of the Orange Broadband Fund, which aims to promote the Internet culture throughout the Kingdom and to make Internet more accessible, Orange Jordan recently completed the training of 305 beneficiaries from the Northern Jordan Valley in the Irbid Governorate.
The students constitute the first wave of graduates to gain basic computer and Internet skills, as part of the grand project organized in collaboration with Shabakat Al Ordon to reach 24,000 citizens around the Kingdom. The students were honored in a graduation ceremony that took place at Shikh Hussain Sport Complex, under the patronage of his Excellency Mr. Adnan Otoum, Acting Governor of Northern Jordan Valley. During the ceremony, certificates of completion issued by Microsoft were disseminated to the students who completed the training prerequisites.
Orange Jordan’s CEO Nayla Khawam highlighted the importance of empowering the Kingdom’s youth and to help our communities benefit from the global ICT revolution in a way that spurs their cultural evolution, thereby making a real difference in the lives of people.
“We are proud of the first batch of graduates,” commented Khawam, “and the fact that it is comprised of individuals of varying age groups and sexes indicates that the Orange broadband Fund has become a major influence in the proliferation of internet penetration in the Kingdom’s governorates, undoubtedly as a result of the special discount offer we launched several months ago.”
“Moreover, we recently celebrated the launch of the computer lab at the Zarqa Secondary School for Boys, which came to crown our efforts towards improving the educational environments in 500 schools around the Kingdom,” she added.
Commenting on this achievement, Shabakat Al Ordon’s CEO Rami Karmi said: “The event we celebrate today signals the start of a new age of ICT awareness in the Kingdom’s governorates, one in which these essential learning tools are used effectively towards the development of the local community.”
Orange Jordan's CSR strategy was launched in mid 2010 to deliver two key projects to the community: the Orange Internet Fund and the Orange Villages project. The first seeks to bolster Internet penetration in the Kingdom’s governorates through a variety of special campaigns, in addition to making the Internet an integral tool in the educational process of various public schools around the Kingdom through infrastructure rehabilitation and capacity building. The latter is a unique project that seeks to deliver much-needed community development initiatives to rural poverty pockets around the Kingdom.

Micro-fund initiative to spur growth in poverty pockets - Jordan Times 18 Feb 2011

Micro-fund initiative to spur growth in poverty pockets

AMMAN - Unemployed citizens in underprivileged areas have the chance to become job creators under a private sector initiative to fund micro-entrepreneurs in poverty pockets.
The initiative, Invest-in-Micro funds, which was launched last year by Shabakat Al Ordon in cooperation with Nuqul Group, aims to encourage the private sector to invest in remote areas where unemployment rates are high and contribute to local development, according to sponsors.
As part of the initiative, sponsored by Shabakat Al Ordon and Nuqul Group, a total of 300 prospect entrepreneurs from Al Koura District in Irbid will be trained in business skills and digital literacy, according to an Invest-in-Micro statement sent to The Jordan Times via e-mail.
Last year, 23 entrepreneurs were vetted by the Shabakat Nuqul MIF Investment Committee and received financial support ranging from JD1,000-JD3,000 through the initiative, the statement added.
“This year we aim to double our efforts. So far we have seven funds created by seven investors from the private sector totalling more than JD350,000 and expect to create up to 600 jobs in remote areas where we expect to support up to 3,000 people,” Rami Karmi, Shabakat Al Ordon CEO, told The Jordan Times over the phone on Thursday.
The initiative aims to empower local residents in poverty pockets across the country to utilise micro-investment services and promote concepts of corporate social responsibility amongst members of the private sector, he added.
“We don’t believe in philanthropy and short-term or fast-track employability programmes as a sustainable solution to positively transform economies… therefore, we worked to create and optimise a grass-roots localised version,” Karmi said.
Through the initiative, participating parties from the private sector are able to contribute to one or more Invest-in-Micro fund, as sponsors match investors with various geographical areas, which are in need of job creation, and oversee the process.

Orange Jordan has signed a partnership agreement with the non-profit association Shabakat Al Ordon to train 24,000 citizens in a number of governorates around the country on essential internet and PC skills as part of the recently launched Orange Internet Fund. This program, which extends over a period of ten months, is geared toward building the capacities of local communities by helping them harness the full power of the internet and other IT applications to increase their chances of attracting viable career opportunities. Under the partnership agreement, Shbakat Al Ordon, in cooperation with Orange Jordan's CSR volunteers, will implement a training programme for a number of locals who, upon completing their assigned modules, will pass their training on to other groups within their respective communities. Trainees will receive accreditation certificates from Microsoft after passing an internet-based examination. The agreement signals the launch of the second phase of the Orange Internet Fund project. The first phase, announced last week, saw the company offer a JOD 5 monthly waiver on broadband internet subscription fees to residents of the Kingdom's governorates irrespective of their internet service providers. The waiver was introduced to both new subscribers and existing ones who wish to upgrade their connections to speeds beyond 128Kbps.
